Frequently Asked Questions

What are scleral contact lenses?

Scleral lenses are large, gas-permeable contacts that vault over the cornea, offering improved comfort and vision for patients with Keratoconus.

How can Keratoconus education benefit me?

Our Doctors are expert Scleral lens fitters.  They use the latest and greatest technology to ensure the best fit for your lenses.  Most of our doctors use an anterior segment ocular coherence tomographer to get the best fit.  Most other fitters do not use this technology.

What should I expect during a Scleral Lens Fitting?

We start with a thorough eye exam. We use corneal topography to confirm the diagnosis of keratoconus or other corneal diseases. Then we will start the fitting process.  We make sure there is a significant improvement in vision over glasses and traditional contact lenses before we make the decision to order the Scleral Lenses.

How much does the fitting and Scleral Contact Lenses cost?

Due to the complexity of fitting the scleral lenses, the cost can vary from $1500 to well over $5,000 for both eyes. Because many insurance companies will cover scleral lenses as a medically necessary benefit, you may have very little out of pocket costs.

I have Keratoconus. Who do I contact for a fitting?

Until our directory is up and running, we are referring all of our visitors to Dr. Joel Hayden at Hayden Optometric Associates in Mansfield, Massachusetts.  The phone number is 508-339-3952. You can visit their website at www.ilovemyeyedoctor.com
